What are some good gifts for a mom with a baby in NICU?

totspotathome asked:

My cousin’s wife just had an emergency c-section about 2.5 months early and her baby will be in the NICU for a few months, I would like to make a basket of things for MOM to keep her occupied, take her mind off things, relax, food stuff…I am looking to spend around $50. Thanks :) You guys are coming up with some wonderful ideas, I’ll never be able to pick the best answer :) And yes, I stress again that this basket is for MOM not baby :)

This is so sweet and thoughtful. My Mom makes gift baskets and she is an expert bargain shopper. I’m going to ask her for you but she won’t get it until tomorrow. I’ll email you her response. Good luck to the baby!

lotion, diaper rash cream sensitive for the baby. heating pads for the belly, magazines, chocolate, a subway sub, a cream for dark undereyes, cute socks. Other stuff, no one really visited me while I was in the hospital, so I would really support her, a woman never forgets who visits her.

That’s so thoughtful of you. How about a few magazines, some (fairly healthy) snacks like pretzels, dried fruit, granola bars, maybe a few sweets… a crossword puzzle book… a journal (so she can “write” to the baby as she chronicles what happens in the NICU)… a calendar so she can check off the days until she gets to take the baby home… maybe a calling card?
Good luck!

My daughter was born just shy of 24 weeks back in 1993. Yeah 13yrs ago and by the grace of god she is still with us today. She weighed one pound at birth and the LAST thing I wanted was people bringing me more and more baby items because to be honest every day there was a chance she wouldn’t live to see the next. I did however want to have my friends around that was about the only thing that helped me relax and keep my mind off things. I enjoyed going places with them as weird as it was, I was never more at ease then I was when I was at the Zoo in San Antonio with a group of my friends. I didn’t want to feel as if I was helpless so them coming to clean my house was out of the question. Give her things for herself such as lotions, and relaxation items {candles, scented soaps and such}

A roll of quarters for the vending machines
A pair of memory foam slippers
Find a word puzzle books (they’re easier to do than crosswords when you are stressed and distracted, I know from experience)
A notepad and pencil because everybody leaves you their phone number (which is great, but it’s hard to keep everything in one place and remember where it is)
You sound like a good friend…hope baby does fine!!

Maybe a basket full of body lotions, a good book,a gift cert. for her and hubby for dinner. I’d be careful about any thing for baby just yet, I’m sure arriving 2.5 months early its not out of danger yet.

My daughter was born 6 weeks early and stayed in the NICU for a month. As a NICU mom I can tell you, it’s not easy! What a wonderful idea, I wish someone would have done that for me! Things I think are a good idea to include in the basket are: slippers, purell hand sanitizer (always washing your hands in NICU!) a journal for mommy to write about what’s happening for the baby later, a note pad to jot down names and numbers of health prof. and new friends made in the NICU, hand lotion (from washing your hands so much!), a disposable camera, snacks, information about preemie’s and baby wearing (as the hospital may not tell you), a warm throw blanket for mom to snooze with in the rocking chair, and maybe even a gift certificate for mom and dad to go out to dinner….you need to take a break from the NICU sometimes!

Awww….I really hope she enjoy’s the gift basket and knowing she’s got a good friend thinking of her!

Pick a theme like movie night or craft time and create a basket from that. Also even though she may not want it a disposable camera for taking pictures. When my daughter was sick in the hospital looking back on it I wish I would’ve taken some pictures not to remember the bad times but she doesn’t have pictures during those times and now it seems a void to me.Our babies are so very precious and we should never miss an opportunity.

Change for the vending machinces Magazines books crosswords a disposable camera maybe a gift card to a resteraunt close by like mcdonalds or something a phone card for her to call relatives out of town most hospitals have a microwave so put some popcorn soup and meals that dont require refridgeration and can be heated in the microwave if she is ****** feeding you may get some things like ****** pads maybe even get a small stuffed animal to put in the babys crib the hospital my baby was born in let u do that also offer to drive her after she is released from the hosp she will have six weeks or more before she can drive maybe even put some pain relivever in like tylenol or somethign it is very stressful having a baby in the nicu so headaches are pretty much expected fruit and applesauce small snack size can a hand held video game or if she has a hobby that can be done easily without alot of supplies get stuff for that like knitting or something
