I need ideas for great baby shower gifts and games?

baby gifts
chewynougat4u asked:

I am looking for ideas for baby shower games and gifts. I have a few games already like the smashing things up in a diaper, guessing how big around mommy is, baby shower bingo, etc. but I need more ideas. Keep in mind that the majority of these guests use english as a second language and have never heard of, let alone been to, a baby shower. I am doing the diaper cake as my big gift to mom, but just in case the other guests don’t get what is going on with it I want to make sure that she has a few other gifts there. I also need ideas for cheap gifts for prizes for those who win the games. I know I am repeating myself but I need it all SO cheap. I am preggo with my 4th baby and I want to be able to give her a great shower without breaking my baby’s bank at the same time. Thanks for any ideas you can offer!!
P.S. for all you people getting ready to give rude answers - these people are IN Germany, therefore it is not their job to learn my language. I have bits and pieces of German, but the guests are divided about 50/50 between Americans and Germans with a basic knowledge of english. Thanks.

How about LETS ALL LEARN ENGLISH.
That should be a fun game.

Hey there! I hope all goes well with the shower, and the new baby!

I know that every baby shower I’ve been to, the prizes that people are get aren’t too spectacular. So, things like small bath sets, nice candles, notes pads, address books, a set of pens, etc, would be nice, I think.

A game that I played at my sister’s baby shower was as follows. I’m not really sure if it would work for ya’ll, but maybe some variation on it. :) You take about 6-8 bottles of baby food, remove the labels. Have people guess what they are (give them a slip of paper and a pen/pencil) by color and smell. So, two rounds of it.

And, I’m going out on a ledge here, but I’ve played the following game at bridal showers. Your write the name of famous people on pieces of paper (one for each guest). Then, you tape it to their back. The rest of the guests have to give them clues as to who it is. It can be anything, really…not even famous people, know that I think about it. Various objects/things/etc.

Hope this helped. Again, good luck!

Editing to add on to the answer above: about the names on back - for baby showers, I have seen fairy tale characters or nursery rhymes. You’ll have to be sure that they are well-known in Germany but that shouldn’t be a problem since that part of the world is where many of our fairy tales came from…

Why don’t you start the invite (unless you’ve already sent them) by calling it an “American-Style Baby Shower to welcome the baby and supply the nursery”? This way, they’ll get the hint. Are baby showers not common in Germany?

Did the mommy-to-be register anywhere? You could also add the registry information to the invite, especially if it is on-line.

Another game would be to take labels off baby food jars and have the guests try to guess the food that is in them - stay away from the blended ones though since they’d be impossible.

Another game is to put clothes pins on people - start with 5 or so… then everytime they say “baby” or “no” or some other key word, a person can take one of the clothes pins away - the person with the most wins. Funny how people will work around words or try to get folks to say it…

A cheap gift might be a little terra cotta flower pot with flower seeds - to signify new life! Or a fall plant of some sort.

Have fun!!

Are there dollar stores in Germany like there are in the US? If so, find some things there to give as prizes to the winners of the games. Look at babyshower.com and you’ll get ideas for games, decorations, etc.

well a simple all around game that we played at my sis shower was we found lil plastic baby pacifiers and made necklaces out of them each person got to wear one anytime someone said the word baby whoever heard that person say was to call them on it and they got to take that persons necklace at the end of the shower whoever had the most necklaces won the prize…….. its harder than i thought not to say baby at a baby shower but it is a universal game in any language HAVE FUN

Check out my page of baby shower ideas, there are lots of games here, many that require very little speaking!

It happens that I grew up in Germany, so if you’d like, I could translate a couple of these for you so everyone could play. Enjoy the baby shower!
